Product Description
The Expedition is a one boat quiver killer. Its adaptable performance allows for seamless transitions between backcountry traverses, traditional multi-day river trips, weekend getaways, and whitewater laps with friends. No other packraft offers a greater range of potential adventures.
The Expedition features a mid-volume hull with a center panel stern and moderately rockered bow, which optimizes tracking, speed, and performance across the broadest range of river conditions from flatwater to lightwater to whitewater. A backband and lace-in seat perfectly balance comfort, performance, and packability. Keep the build as light as possible, or add the optional patented 3-point thigh straps and whitewater footbrace for better performance in lightwater and whitewater.
The Expedition is only available in a Whitewater Deck or Removable Deck configuration. We recommend the Gnarwhal for similar uses and performance in a Self Bailer.
Recommended Uses
Versatile
The most versatile packraft in our lineup, the Expedition is fully adaptable to a multi-week wilderness traverse, desert float trip, or lapping the local whitewater run. The ultimate Alaska ready packraft for flatwater, lightwater, and whitewater.
Lightwater
Our highest performance lightwater packraft, the Expedition particularly excels on shallow splashy rivers that require super quick turns and tight eddy catches. Less experienced and warm water paddlers should consider the self-bailing Gnarwhal. Optional thigh straps recommended.
Whitewater
With the optional thigh straps, the Expedition is great packraft for up to Class III+ whitewater. Expert paddlers may be able to paddle harder sections up to Class IV, but we recommend a more performance model like the Mage or Valkyrie if that is your focus. Beginner and intermediate whitewater paddlers should consider the Gnarwhal for a more forgiving and learning focused whitewater packraft.

Build Configurations
Whitewater Deck without Thigh Straps
The standard Whitewater Deck (WW Deck) is our driest and warmest configuration for the Expedition. It is ideal for colder water and cool climates. The Whitewater Deck features a large kayak style cockpit and one-piece PEX spray skirt rim (Spray skirts sold separately). This build has attachments for 3-point thigh straps and a WW Footbrace, which can be purchased separately.
Whitewater Deck with Thigh Straps
This build adds our patented 3-Point thigh straps and WW footbrace to the Whitewater Deck build. This is our preferred configuration for lightwater and whitewater adventures. The 3-point thigh straps and WW Footbrace are compatible with all builds and can be added later if you purchase the basic Whitewater Deck build.
Removable Deck without Thigh Straps
The Removable Deck (RD Deck) features the same cockpit as the standard Whitewater Deck, but with a perimeter zipper for converting to an open boat for more relaxing days. The Removable Deck maximizes versatility for the broadest range of paddling conditions, but is not as dry in lightwater and whitewater as the Whitewater Deck. This build has attachments for 3-point thigh straps and a WW Footbrace, which can be purchased separately.
Removable Deck with Thigh Straps
This build adds our patented 3-Point thigh straps and WW footbrace to the Removable Deck build. We recommend this for maximum versatility from warm days on the lake to cold days in whitewater. The 3-point thigh straps and WW Footbrace are compatible with all builds and can be added later if you purchase the basic Removable Deck build.
Cargo Fly Zipper
Our innovative Cargo Fly internal storage system comes standard on the Expedition. The Cargo Fly features an airtight zipper installed in the stern of the boat to allow you to store your gear inside the tubes. The system provides drier and more secure gear storage and improved paddling performance due to a lower center of gravity.
Internal Dry Bags may be purchased separately and are designed to work with the Cargo Fly system. The bags clip in place along each side of the tubes with a side release buckle and allow for better organization and weight balance than placing the contents of your pack loose inside the Cargo Fly. They also act as additional balanced air chambers to make it easier to get to shore in the event of a puncture.
Weight Capacity
With multiple sizes, the Expedition will fit most paddlers up to 230lbs. Larger paddlers should consider the Gnarwhal. Cargo weight recommendations are 20-40lbs for maximum whitewater performance, up to 60lbs for general purpose, and up to 100lbs for extended trips on larger rivers.

Alpacka Expedition
How Does it Compare?
Expedition vs. Caribou
The Expedition is a much better whitewater and lightwater performance packraft than the Caribou, which makes it the choice for packrafters looking for a versatile packraft with a whitewater focus. The Caribou is lighter and more compact, especially in the Open build and is a better option for more of a flatwater to lightwater focus. The Caribou’s late rise bow is a better choice for ackward or bulky items like bikerafting.
Expedition vs. Gnarwhal
The Expedition and Gnarwhal very similar designs, but with different intended uses. For the versatile packrafter, we recommend the Expedition for colder climates or if you prefer a deck and spray skirt. The Gnarwhal is recommended for warmer climates or if you prefer a self bailer. The Gnarwhal is also preferred for a beginner/intermediate whitewater focused packraft.
